Edakkal Caves are a pair of natural caves in the Ambukuthi Hills about 25 km from Kalpetta. The caves contain some of the oldest rock engravings in India — pictographs and inscriptions estimated to be over 6,000 years old from the Neolithic period. The carvings depict human figures, animals, symbols and what appears to be a form of early script. Reaching the caves requires a scenic 1 km trek uphill through forested terrain, and the trek itself rewards with beautiful views of the surrounding Wayanad hills. The caves have a naturally formed cleft roof letting in light, giving them a unique open-sky character.

Pookode Lake is a beautiful freshwater lake nestled in the forests of Wayanad at an altitude of 770 metres, about 15 km from Kalpetta. The lake is surrounded by shola forests and the reflections of the trees on the still water are breathtaking. The Kerala Forest Department manages the area and offers pedal boating and rowboating on the lake. A freshwater aquarium at the site displays local fish species. A pleasant nature trail winds through the surrounding forest. The lake is a popular picnic destination and the lush greenery around it makes it one of Wayanad's most photogenic spots.

Soochipara Falls — also known as Sentinel Rock Waterfalls — is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Wayanad, cascading in three tiers for a total drop of around 200 metres through dense tropical rainforest. A short trek of about 2 km through the forest leads to the falls. At the base, a natural pool forms in the rocks where visitors can swim and cool off. The surrounding forest is rich with wildlife — butterflies, birds and small mammals can be spotted along the trail. The falls are most impressive during and after the monsoon when the volume of water is at its peak.

Banasura Sagar Dam is India's largest earth dam, located about 21 km from Kalpetta in the Wayanad hills. Built across the Karamanathodu stream, the dam creates a vast reservoir with emerald-green waters surrounded by forested hills. Several small islands emerge from the reservoir and boat rides take visitors around them through the scenic backwaters. The dam is named after the demon Banasura of Hindu mythology and the backdrop of the Banasura Hills adds to its dramatic visual appeal. The entire area is lush and green, and the mist that often clings to the surrounding hills creates an otherworldly atmosphere.

Karapuzha Dam is the largest irrigation dam in Kerala, built across the Karapuzha river about 12 km from Kalpetta. The dam provides irrigation water to vast agricultural lands in Wayanad and Malappuram districts. The reservoir is set amid gently rolling green hills dotted with paddy fields, tea estates and pepper gardens. The drive to the dam passes through picturesque Wayanad countryside and the dam itself offers sweeping views of the broad reservoir. It is a peaceful, less-crowded destination compared to the more popular spots in Wayanad, and perfect for those who appreciate quiet natural scenery.

Chembra Peak, at 2,100 metres, is the highest peak in Wayanad and one of the most popular trekking destinations in Kerala. The summit can be reached in about 3–4 hours of trekking through grasslands and shola forests. Halfway up, trekkers are rewarded with the famous heart-shaped lake — a small natural lake that maintains a perfect heart shape and never dries up. From the summit on clear days, you can see across three states — Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The trek is moderately challenging and the views throughout are spectacular, making it one of the most rewarding treks in South India.

Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary is part of the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, which in turn forms a critical corridor within the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. The sanctuary covers 344 square kilometres of deciduous and semi-evergreen forests. Wildlife safaris through the sanctuary offer opportunities to spot wild elephants, Indian gaur (bison), spotted deer, sambar, wild boar, jungle cats, leopards and occasionally tigers. The sanctuary is also a birding hotspot with over 300 species recorded. The forest drives are scenic and the chances of elephant sightings are particularly high.

Wayanad's rolling highlands are blanketed with tea, coffee and spice plantations. The region produces some of Kerala's finest tea — both orthodox and CTC varieties — in estates that have been operating since the British colonial era. A drive through the tea country is one of Wayanad's most scenic experiences, with rows of emerald green tea bushes stretching across mist-covered hillsides as far as the eye can see. Many estates offer guided walks where you can learn about the cultivation process, watch tea plucking and visit the processing factory to see how the fresh leaves are converted into tea. Fresh tea purchased directly from an estate is both cheaper and more flavourful than shop-bought varieties.

Meenmutty Falls is Kerala's second-largest waterfall and one of Wayanad's most spectacular natural attractions. The falls drop in three distinct stages over a total height of around 300 metres through dense tropical forest. A moderate 2 km trek through the forest leads to the base of the falls — the trail itself is beautiful with lush vegetation and the sound of the falls growing louder as you approach. The final view of the three-tiered falls framed by forest is breathtaking. The falls are fed by the Meenmutti river and are at their most powerful between July and November during and after the monsoon.
